Deciduous, Evergreen, or New Zealand Native Tree?

When thinking about which trees to plant there are lots of considerations, one of the first things to decide on is whether you want a deciduous tree (loses its leaves in the winter e.g. a flowering cherry tree), an evergreen tree (doesn’t lose its leaves in the winter e.g. a portugal laurel), or if you specifically want a New Zealand native tree (native to Aotearoa e.g a kowhai).

Each tree type has their strengths and weaknesses so first consider things like; whether you want more light in the winter (go for a deciduous), or whether the area it covers would be challenging to clean up in Autumn (go for a evergreen), and even the style of the architecture on the property (a classic kiwi bach looks great with native plantings). A mixture of tree types can be really attractive and allow for a considered and perennially attractive landscape.
