Deciduous Trees

Deciduous means that these trees will lose their foliage to some extent (some trees are semi-deciduous) over the colder months, and regain it as the weather warms up. Deciduous trees can also be native to New Zealand however by and large most native trees are evergreen.

A deciduous tree tends to be quite a visual spectacle as it goes through its annual growth cycle. If you want a sense of drama and occasion as well as changing degrees of shadiness these can be ideal.

Some popular deciduous trees in Canterbury include flowering cherry, some varieties of magnolia, japanese maples, and the beautifully golden leafed yellow ginkgo biloba.
